Garfield McCook Kicks Off Festival Competition for the Jamaican Diaspora

Kingston, Jamaica — April 2021 (Powerhouse Global Media/Acclaim PR) — Garfield McCook has launched the Jamaica International Independence Festival Song Competition (JIIFSC) as a way of continuing Jamaican cultural events abroad. The inaugural staging of the USA-based competition is set to bring more opportunities for overseas Jamaican artists, who do not typically have a chance to participate in the events being hosted in Jamaica.

McCook, an artist who goes by the name of Gary G and hails from Harbour View, migrated to the United States in the late 80’s. He says, “In 2017, I enquired about entering the Jamaica Festival Song Competition. However, the rules and regulations stated that an entrant must be living in Jamaica 2 years prior to entering the competition. Since I was residing in the USA, the rule automatically eliminated me.”

“I reached out to the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission via email asking them to explain the rationale behind the rule, but I received no response. I reached out again in 2018 and received no response.  I then investigated the possibility of having a competition that Jamaicans living abroad could enter,” McCook explained.

JIIFSC will be an annual event and is open to Jamaicans, 18 years and older, who reside outside of Jamaica. Artists can get involved, by completing an application on the JIIFSC.com website by May 15, 2021. When submitting the application artistes are required to pay a non-refundable entrance fee of US$150. They must upload their song in a MP3 format, and email a lyrics sheet to jiifsc@gmail.com.

Slated to take place on July 31, 2021, the premier competition will be broadcasted virtually from 7pm to 10pm EST across multiple digital platforms. There will be a limited live audience, including guest appearances, judges and promoters, at the venue, which is Caribbean Life TV Studios (CLTV Studios) in Stone Mountain, Georgia.

Artists who may not have an MP3 ready can submit the application and fee by May 15, 2021. An MP3 can follow and be submitted by May 31, 2021. Groups can be 2-4 members and songs should be no longer than 4 minutes in length. Top participants can expect grand incentives, with the first, second and third prizes being US $8,000, US $4,000 and US $1,000 respectively.

“The aim of this competition is to provide Jamaican artistes residing overseas, who still have a penchant for the culture and the music, with a platform that allows them to showcase their talents. Our motto is, ‘Loving You From Afar.’ Part proceeds from profits received will go towards the enhancement of the cultural activities in Jamaica,” McCook added.

Badda General and ZJ Liquid’s ‘Barrel’ Sparks a Huge Buzz

Gold Up Music Produced Single a Hit with DJs, Fans and Challenge

It’s official! The “Barrel” has shipped and dancehall fans are going crazy over the new hit collabo from Badda General and ZJ Liquid! Produced by Gold Up Music, this musical team has sparked a major buzz, which emanates from a collection of sound system and DJ support, local and international airplay, fan love and even a hilarious challenge.

Partners-in-music Badda General and ZJ Liquid deliver a comedic lyrical exchange from the moment the infectious riddim drops on “Barrel.” The opening lyrics are so funny that every DJ literally has to pull it up and play it twice. Essentially, in good humor, but in all seriousness, ZJ Liquid challenges nearly every item Badda General has packed in the “Barrel.”

As the song continues, so do the punch lines. However, the biggest joke of all is that everyone who has ever packed and shipped a barrel to family and friends understands how selective the requests can be, along with the costs and hustle to purchase the items.

” ‘Barrel’ is doing well because it’s relatable and different than what dancehall fans are used to,” says Badda General.

“Overall, my goal is to bring content to dancehall, which ‘inna real life’ resonates with wide audiences in many ways.”

Garnering airplay in local and international marketplaces (song premiered on Hot 97 this week), from yard to abroad,  listeners are vibing to “Barrel.” As a result, many have flooded social media with their “Barrel Challenge” videos, catapulting the song to a whole different level of funny. The reenactments and skits to “Barrel” are hilarious, generating an abundance of likes and shares.

The behind-the-scenes chemistry of the music team has certainly contributed to “Barrel’s” appeal. Badda General has collabora⁶ted with both ZJ Liquid and Gold Up Music previously. Also in 2021, Badda General and Gold Up Music joined forces for “The Message.”

Known for witty, reality dancehall, red-hot deejay Badda General took 2020 by storm with a slew of smashes that kept virtual places and spaces raving. The seminal “I Wish” ranked atop DJ and fan playlists and still causes a frenzy everytime it is played. Badda General’s acclaimed debut EP “Money App PROJECT” solidified his position as one of the genre’s top acts, spawning the likes of “Money App,” “Outside” and other gems.

ZJ Liquid is without  question one of Jamaica’s most influential and innovative impresarios, who has helped redefine the dancehall. Whether donning the hats of DJ, recording artist or producer, he wears them all well. The creative dropped his 4th album “Point A View” to rave reviews in 2020, heavily relying on social media and music visuals to promote his content amidst the pandemic.

Based in Kingston, Jamaica, Gold Up Music is led by Raph (of Sativa Sound) and  popular dancehall composer Zack Ariyah. The record
label made its debut in 2018 with the release of their single “Belong With Me” featuring Jamaica’s international sensation Shenseea, which amassed over 2 million views on YouTube. The duo has produced for a who’s who of artists including Shatta Wale, Iba Mahr,  Mr. Lexx, Chronixx, Konshens, Aidonia, Chronic Law and counting.
